We have produced the world's most powerful quadrupole magnets -- capable of focusing intense beams to tighter spots than possible before. These new PMQ magnets will allow for more efficient production of x-rays which are critical for applications in biology, material science, and dozens of other areas of research.
The IFEL experiment is an advanced acceleration concept that is proving itself, and could provide the technology for future colliders. While all advanced acceleration ideas face problems in "scaling" -- making them work on very large machines -- the IFEL may be promising for intermediate energies such as are needed for medical accelerators and research machines.
