| abstract: | The proposal to perform a series of plasma lens experiments at the Final Focus Test Beam at SLAC has been described earlier. We report on our progress towards validation of concepts involved in the experiments, including the laser ionized plasma production test, development of the supersonic gas jet as the plasma source, and study on focused beam size measurement techniques. Most importantly, the effects of background events due to plasma lenses in future linear collider detectors, such as that in the NLC, are studied in details and are shown to be within detector tolerances. |

| abstract: | We intend to carry out a series of plasma lens experiments at the Final Focus Test Beam facility at SLAC. These experiments will be the first to study the focusing of particle beams by plasma focusing devices in the parameter regime of interest for high energy colliders, and is expected to lead to plasma lens designs capable of unprecedented spot sizes. Plasma focusing of positron beams will be attempted for the first time. We will study the effects of lens aberrations due to various lens imperfections. Several approaches will be applied to create the plasma required including laser ionization and beam induced tunneling ionization of a working gas - the latter which has never been observed before. The compactness of our device should prove to be of interest for applications at the SLC and the next generation linear colliders. |

Analytic and computational models of plasma lenses are briefly reviewed and several design examples for the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam are presented. The examples include discrete, thick, and adiabatic lenses. A potential plasma source with desirable lens characteristics is presented. |

| abstract: | The Plasma Wake-field Accelerator (PWFA) continues to be the object of much investigation, due to the promise of the ultra-high accelerating gradients that can exist in relativistic plasma waves driven in the wake of charged particle beams. These large amplitude plasma wake-fields are of interest in the laboratory, both for the wealth of basic nonlinear plasma wave phenomena which can be studied, as well as for the applications of acceleration and focusing of electrons and positrons in linear colliders. Plasma wake-field waves are also of importance in nature, due to their possible role in direct cosmic ray acceleration. The purpose of the present work is to review the experimental advances made in PWFA research at Argonne National Laboratory, in which many interesting beam and plasma phenomena have been observed. Emphasis is given to discussion of the nonlinear aspects of the PWFA beam-plasma interaction. (29 References). |

The dynamics of beam self-pinching and the fast collisionless evolution of a Bennett-like, near-equilibrium profile are examined theoretically and computationally. Megavolt-per-meter plasma wake fields are excited by a intense 21-MeV, multipicosecond bunch of electrons in a plasma of density n/sub e/ approximately=10/sup 13/ cm/sup -3/, and probed by a low-intensity 15-MeV witness pulse with a variable delay time behind the intense bunch. | abstract: | Dense particle beams travelling in plasmas can produce very high electric and magnetic fields, and these fields, described by Chen and others can be used to accelerate and focus particles. The effects on trailing beams and self focussing can be strong and nonlinear. This paper discusses two aspects of self pinching beams: 1) the production of beams which do not self pinch, and 2) a short focal length plasma lens which uses self pinching to reduce beam sizes at the interaction point of a linear collider. As an example, we consider a final focus system for the Stanford Linear Collider, considering plasma production, vacuum system and backgrounds, and show how the luminosity could be increased using this system. We also discuss experimental tests of the plasma lens concept. |
