Observation of ultra-wide bandwidth, up to a full width of 15%, high-gain operation of a self-amplified spontaneous emission free election laser (SASE FEL) is reported. This type of lasing is obtained with a strongly chirped beam (~ 1.7%) emitted from the accelerator. Because of non-linear pulse compression during beam transport, a short, high current pulse with strong mismatch errors is injected into the undulator, bringing about high FEL gain. Start-end simulations reproduce key features of the measured results, and provide insight into mechanisms, such as angular spread in both emitted photon and electron trajectory distributions, which yield novel features in the radiation spectrum.
